$200,000 Kona Gold Stakes Draws Wide Open Field of Seven
Masochistic tops the field as the morning line favorite at 2-1 and will be making his first start for trainer Ron Ellis. A five-year-old gelded son of Sought After, the California-bred has won four of his six starts and will be trying graded stakes competition for the first time. He went gate to wire in his first start of the year, an optional claiming race at Santa Anita, last time out as the favorite. Tyler Baze has picked up the mount and they will break from post six.
Grade 1 winner Sahara Sky returning off a layoff
Jerry Hollendorfer will saddle the veteran, Sahara Sky, as the second choice at 5-2 on the morning line. A seven-year-old son of Pleasant Tap, he has won eight times over the course of his career and has bankrolled over $1.1 million in earnings. A former Grade 1 winner, he has been on the shelf since finishing sixth and last in the Triple Bend (G1) in June as the even-money favorite. Rafael Bejarano will be aboard from post position four.
Ambitious spot for Caminetto off the bench
Also in the field at morning line odds of 8-1 is Caminetto for trainer Bob Baffert. A six-year-old son of Stormy Atlantic, he made his career debut in 2012 and broke his maiden in his third start. He followed that up with a second victory and then went to the sidelines until July of 2014 when he returned to action and finished ninth and last. He is coming back off of a nine-month layoff and will break from post two under Martin Garcia.
